| RUN!!! That’s all she could think of . As fast and as far as she could. Leave this place, leave him, leave this world. With tears stinging her eyes and coursing down her face she backed out of the drive, looking upon the face she loved one last time.
As she drove the events kept rewinding in her mind. Trying to make some sense of all the confusion. How did this happen in the first place? This man that she silently loved for so long. She never showed her affection to him. How did he know? She had accepted the fact that he’d never love her. What made him come to her after all this time? They both knew it was wrong, they were both married with families of their own. But even with distance between them, they were such good friends, they always had fun when they were together and consoled one another when times were hard. They could always count on each other to be there. He could make her feel like she was on top of the world with just a smile. Make her feel like she was special with the smallest word in ways that no one else had ever done. So just showing a little more affection for one another, that wouldn’t be bad. Just as long as it didn’t go too far. But it had. Without either of them realizing it. That night, when she was so upset with her life. Regretting every decision that she’d made, except for the one regarding him. She went to him just looking for a shoulder. They drove to that special part of the beach where it was quiet and they could sit out on the pier and talk. She remembered it as if it had just happened. The wind was blowing and a chill fell over her. He wrapped his arm around her to keep her warm. She leaned into his shoulder, but it was not the chill that shook her tonight. It was the thought of being out on the beach in the dark with the man she loved. She became silent with thoughts flooding her mind. Was it her body language that he was reading, did he know what she was thinking? He stroked her cheek with a soft and gentle hand. He lifted her face so that he could stare into her eyes. Her heart beating like a drum she tried to break away from his gaze, but his eyes were so beautiful and magnetizing she found it impossible. He didn’t hesitate to lower his mouth to her forehead planting a delicate kiss as she closed her eyes. Holding her head in his hands he moved lower brushing his cheek against hers until he found her lips. He had wanted her in a mad and passionate way for so long. His lips brushed against hers once, then twice. He wanted to make sure she would respond before he continued. When he felt her lips open, he passionately took advantage of them. She broke away from her thoughts when she heard the emergency broadcast come over the radio. Winter storm warning in effect. Heavy snow fall, high winds, and wind chill factors 10 below zero in the area until tomorrow afternoon. Stay indoors if possible. Indoors? Should she go home and face the only man who would probably ever love her even though she couldn’t reciprocate that love. He’d done so much to cause her pain, yet she still felt guilty for betraying him. No she couldn’t go home, not yet. She still had to work this out in her head. She looked at the sky, no sign of snow so far. She kept driving, not to any particular place, just driving. She returned to her thoughts. As she opened her lips, he passionately took advantage of them. She remembered the burning sensation she felt inside as his tongue entered her mouth. The tingling that took over her body as he found her tongue and the way she felt as they wrestled one with the other. Erratic breathing and pounding heart beats she knew she had to stop this madness before it went too far. “We can’t do this,” she said as she tried to pull back from him. He looked into her eyes, which was always how he got his way, she could never say no to those big bright brown eyes. “Do you really want me to stop?” He asked but he already knew the answer. Her silence only made the moment more passionate, as he brought her back into him and continued kissing her. His hand resting on her waist found the opening to her shirt. He gently slid his hand inside and made contact with her skin. Running his hand up her waist and over her stomach he finally rested it on her breast. He broke from the tongue wrestle and made his way to her neck. Kissing her, listening to her breathe and seeing the way she reacted to his touch, excited him. Thrilled him beyond control. He slipped off her shirt and kissed her breasts. There was no turning back now. As she recalled the most sensual part of her life over the moments that followed, she didn’t care to realize that snow had begun falling. Cars were scarce now, only a few here and there as huge snowflakes fell to the ground. Where was she headed? Not even she knew. Only the full moon on the beach that night had witnessed what they never talked about. Sometimes she would gaze up at the moon and ask it if it remembered that night. But no answer did she ever receive, the moon is the best at keeping secrets. Weeks went by and they carried on their friendship as usual. He texted her, which was the way they always communicated. Meet him in the park, oh this will be fun she thought to herself as she excitedly made her way in that direction. He was sitting on their favorite bench, the one hidden by the trees at the edge of the forest. But as she approached, she didn’t see that smile he always has, but instead the look of deep sadness. It was a cold morning but the look on his face chilled her to the bone. The roads were quickly becoming snow covered. She wouldn’t have been out on them if she were thinking correctly. Another emergency broadcast came over the radio. Expected over a foot of snowfall by midnight. Power outages are likely. “What’s wrong?” She asked with a definite tone of worry in her voice. He said nothing for the longest time but just looked deeply into her eyes. “You’re scaring me,” she finally broke the silence. “I need you to know,” he whispered. “I need you to know, that I’ll always love you!” She didn’t like the sound of this. Where was it headed? What was he saying? “I can’t do this anymore. I can’t live like this. It’s time we stepped back.” Stepped back? From what? No! This isn’t happening! Her head was spinning. She couldn’t think. A pain welled up inside her so furious and fast that she thought it would crush her. She was so engrossed in thoughts she barely noticed how the weather was whipping around her like an angry monster. The sky, host to its tantrum. She wasn’t frightened though, she was hurt. This pain in her head and heart were overpowering any other emotions she might feel right now. Almost there she thought, but where she didn’t know. She didn’t seem to care. Against her sense of logic, which was slowly starting to return, she pressed harder on the gas. The snow covered roads were becoming increasingly difficult to drive on. She was about to drift into thought once again when the sight in front of her eye threw her back to her senses. A snow covered tree, unable to bear the weight any longer was falling right into her path. “Oh God,” she thought as she hit the brakes. She tried not to slam on them so she wouldn’t lose control, but it made no difference. Her car slid into the tree, flipped and smashed down on it’s top. When she awoke it was near dusk. Scared now and cold she didn’t know what to do. She crawled from the car and cursed herself for being so stupid. Her head bleeding and throbbing with pain, she had trouble breathing from where the air bag had slammed into her chest. She started walking. Almost there she thought. She wanted to cry but she didn’t want him to see her pain. See how vulnerable she was. All she could hear was the pounding of her heart and him repeating about it being the right thing to do. She didn’t want to think about what was right for anyone else. She’d been doing that all her life. Finally she wanted to do what was right for her. And now he’s standing here telling her that it’s not right. She couldn’t think anymore and she didn’t want to hear this. “It’s ok.” She told him. “I’ll be fine.” She always pretended to be tougher than she really was. She kissed him on the cheek and told him she’d see him later. She slowly turned and walked toward her car as the tears came down like rain. He hated to see her in pain, but what else could he do? She knew deep inside that nothing could have ever come from their relationship. It was a forbidden love when she first realized it, forbidden when he realized it, and will be forbidden forever. She was happier in those last few months than she’d ever been in her life. She should at least be thankful to him for that, she tried to reason with herself. She walked and walked. Not far now, she thought. Her feet freezing in the cold snow. Her face red and chapped from the harsh wind, she kept walking. Struggling to keep her breath, she smiled as she saw the pier lingering in the distance. She looked up to see full moon gazing down on her from above, lighting her way. “Do you remember that night?” She asked out loud as if the moon would actually reply. She trudged on until she finally came to that special part of the beach where it was quiet and they could sit out on the pier and talk. Finding it hard to keep her balance in the snow now, she slowly made it to the end of the pier. She sat once again rewinding the episode in her mind that took place there such a short time ago. She needed to go home. She needed to be warm. She felt for her cell phone praying that with the bad weather she could still make a call. Searching for the signal bar, she tried to call home. All circuits are busy was the only reply. Lines must be down. She tried again. No luck. She flipped open the keypad and painfully typed out a message. I Love You is all it said as she sent it off. Her body now numb to the freezing temperature, she leaned back on a post and closed her eyes. At the funeral, no one could understand why he was so distraught. After all, they weren’t that close to each other. Distant friends maybe, but that’s all. He kept whispering I’m sorry and I love you under his breath so no one could hear but her. He had wanted her in a mad and passionate way for so long. Tears began streaming down his face as the priest gave the eulogy and recalled her last words to the world. I Love You that had been scrolled out on her phone. He quietly pulled out his cell phone and reviewed the message he had gotten that night. A message that he will hold in his heart for the rest of his life. |
